Thanksgiving is only a few days away. What is your favorite Thanksgiving recipe? Will you be making it this year? Mind sharing?
I don't have any, I am not A Merry Can. I do however enjoy roast turkey regardless of occasion, and Jess' pumpkin pies are pretty tasty.
This is my favourite song right now.
HAI! I've been very quiet the last week or so. First I was cramming at work to prepare for time off, then I took that time off. My parents flew in last Wednesday, so since then I've been hanging out with them, eating far too much and doing touristy things - many of which, I had never done before, despite having been to and from this city several times as a tourist before moving here.
Today is their final day in Chicago, so they'll be bringing their luggage up here shortly so we can go to the local farmer's market and the zoo before taking them to the airport. In lieu of getting my green card so I can go home and see *everyone*, it's been nice seeing them.
I'd better get ready. I just wanted to say I'm not dead or something.
While this song from the obscure British duo Boy Least Likely To was a surprise, the film's plot was cheesy and predictable. Thankfully, I could forgive it because there were plenty of laughs along the way - especially from Amy as white trash Angie to Tina's uptight career woman Kate, and Sigourney Weaver as the head of the surrogacy agency Kate finds Angie through.
Don't be alarmed if I tell you "I want you to put your baby in me" for some time to come.
Other than that, my weekend was uneventful. On Saturday, we did as little as possible. On Sunday we walked around a whole lot looking at furniture (because Jess likes to torture herself) and buying hippy food. I just wanted the break as I am very tired lately, not helped by the ever-changing weather.
Aside from a few Xbox achievements, I did little of note this weekend.
I was excited for this week - Mario Kart Wii just came out in the US, Grand Theft Auto IV is out tomorrow - but because GameStop suck a giant fat cock, I won't have either till god-knows-when. On top of that, I didn't have a great day at work today and I just want to curl up in bed listening to nice music.
This weekend was productive but generally sucksome.
It all started Friday night. I got out of work only an hour or so late after a network outage prevented me from launching a series of changes to my latest project. I met Jess at home, then we walked to a Thai place close to where we live for dinner. We wanted to go somewhere different as we usually visit the same five places to eat.
The food was great and it wasn't too busy, so we decided to add it to our roster. On the way home, we also spotted a diner we wanted to check out and picked up some DVDs to watch - Pulse, 30 Days Of Night and King Of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters.
We watched the hilariously terrible Pulse (I only chose it because it had Ian Somerhalder aka Boone from Lost in it), then called it a night.
It would have been a blissful night of rest, but I woke up twice almost choking to death like a Spinal Tap drummer. I took some drugs and fell back asleep, but then at 3am I needed the bathroom. I felt extremely nauseous still and ended up yakking. That was just what I needed and I managed to sleep.
After dosing up on Ibuprofen for a remnant headache, Jess I then headed out for the day. We went to Target to pick up some supplies and little bits (she got some clothes, I got Bully: Scholarship Edition for the Xbox 360). From there, Jess went to fetch some craft supplies, I looked at nerdy things, then we grabbed lunch at Panera Bread.
When we got home, I played some Bully. This Rockstar game, the same folks who made Grand Theft Auto, was beset with controversy on its original 2006 release for the PlayStation 2. Rockstar even went so far as to rename it Canis Canem Edit in the UK to escape the negative connotations of the name. Naturally, it doesn't live up to the negative attention. Although basically GTA set in a boarding school, you are punished for bullying other students and instead must complete missions that get you in the good books of different cliques.
It's actually a solid little game - even if the graphics were very obviously scaled up in a hurry; with shorter, much less frustrating missions than its crime sim sibling.
By this point in the day, there were plenty of drunken Americans celebrating St. Patrick's Day so we remained very firmly entrenched. We watched King Of Kong first - a documentary about one guy's attempt at getting the world record at Donkey Kong. It was actually a really enjoyable film, and certainly showed the dorkier side of my hobby. After that, we watched the surprisingly excellent 30 Days Of Night before hitting the hay.
Jess had a brief lay in Sunday while I played more Bully. She got up, then we headed out to do our taxes to get them over and done with. The guy doing our taxes was very friendly and helpful, and didn't take forever despite the hourly rate H&R Block charge. As much as we knew it was coming, when we ended up having to pay him $255 to tell us we owed almost $4,000 in taxes for the year, it was still pretty depressing. Thankfully, we'd been saving in preparation.
After that bombshell, we went to the diner we'd spotted on Friday to get some lunch. It was busy, so the service was lacking, but the food was pretty tasty.
We spent the rest of Sunday doing very little - we played some video games, watched Rock Of Love and various other bits and bobs, and generally chilled out ready for another week of work.
It's been a good week.
With the launch out of the way, work has been less hectic. There were still bits and pieces to do on the sites we launched - some post-launch bug fixes, new features and responses to feedback. Other than that, I got to move onto my other project which - while also bearing an ever-looming deadline - I am comfortable about.
Tuesday was Jess' birthday so we went to our favourite Mexican place. As it was a special occasion, we had cocktails and dessert... and I'm very glad we did. Despite it being a girly drink, I love pina colada; and the weird ice cream things we had for dessert were very tasty. Jess really wanted to go to a Thai place, but given the distance, this was a perfect substitute.
Yesterday, I left work just after 5.30pm and got home around 6.15pm, despite having to take a detour to drop off our rent cheque. Considering last week I didn't leave work/get home until around the same time the following morning, it was nice. Jess was staying late at work, though, so I didn't know what to do with myself.
I did very little. I made myself a very simple and meat-free dinner, watched a whole disc of Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law then got into bed and played Solitaire on my swanky new phone. Somehow, I held off the sleepiness washing over me until Jess was home and in bed.
She had to get up early again this morning, leaving me to bum around. I spent my morning devouring another disc of Harvey Birdman, dicking around on the computer (it's amazing how much time you can waste looking at online galleries, Wikipedia entries and Amazon) and playing more Solitaire and Bubble Breaker.
My lunch was a bit more interesting - Jess had brought me home some steak, mashed potatoes and broccoli last night so I reheated that and downed it with copious amounts of Diet Coke. My dessert was Dairy Milk from our stash of imported chocolate.
I'm about to get a shower then head to meet Jess after work so we can pick up the last of her birthday presents. Despite two consecutive weeks of one of us working the weekend, things are calming down as the weather slowly (oh so slowly) picks up.
This week's calmer Dale is soundtracked by...
- One Cell In The Sea by A Fine Frenzy
- Deserter's Songs by Mercury Rev
- Armchair Apocrypha by Andrew Bird
- Logic Will Break Your Heart by The Stills
List three things you'd buy with your last $20. One practical, one frivolous and one of your choosing.
- Food
- Diet Coke
- A copy of Poison's greatest hits
Oh Monday. Monday is the stray dog sniffing your butt crack as you wake up passed out on your doorstep after a heavy night of drinking. Monday is a teenage boy having sex - it comes too soon and is always disappointing and awkward. Monday is generally repulsive.
We had a good weekend, but like every other weekend, it just doesn't last long enough.
On Saturday, we got up super-early and headed out to pick up a rental car from the nearby Hertz. We got a beast of an SUV - the sort of thing NASA uses to transport rockets to the launch pad - and drove it back to our place to load it up with a desk for Josie and a ton of stuff for the thrift store.
The car had one of those little navigation computers in it (well, being an older model, the small display unit was connected to a giant black box in the glove compartment) but we very quickly discovered it sucked: somehow it lost track of where we were on a major freeway. Never a good sign. Eventually we made it to Josie's and waited till she got home to give her our desk.
From there, we bundled down the road to IKEA to pick out and pick up a new desk, lamps and other little odds and sods we needed. We spent a fair amount, but we had saved money for this occasion, so it wasn't too bad.
With the car loaded up, we then went to lunch at a place called Claim Jumper. Apparently, it is a chain from California. The food wasn't bad - my burger wasn't the best I'd had, but it was still tasty; and the baked potato I chose to go with it was dee-lish-uss.
I can't remember the sequence of the afternoon, but we went to a mall and a Target to do some shopping (Jess and I had Target vouchers, and had a list of things we wanted for the cats and the house, too). After that, we dropped people off and drove back into the city - first taking things to the thrift store as planned, then unloading our own crap before taking the car back.
Sunday was just as manic. Jess got up early to return the car keys, then we started the laundry off and I got to work on putting together the desk. I'm happy putting IKEA stuff together, it's usually only when things require more than two hands that I need help. With that and the laundry done, we got lunch, I went to pick up a cable and looking at mobile phones, then we had a lazy afternoon.
I'm pretty tired right now... and it's going to be a busy week with seeing Josh's band, turning 28, staying late Friday to launch this site (I fixed the last two bugs today!) and the rest. Eek. Pencil me in for a weekend of sleep ASAP, please.
Today was another gorgeous day in the Virgin Islands. At 7am or so, we heard this horrible grinding engine sound that I later discovered was the guy clearing the paths with a leaf blower. I managed to sleep a little longer thanks to Radiohead's In Rainbows then we got our shit together for today's adventure.
We went to the other side of the island to a place called Frederiksted to do some shopping. The town seemed a little run down and a lot of shops were closed because of some holiday or other, but we got some browsing done. We ate a packed lunch with a beautiful view out to sea near Frederiksted pier, then drove to the Cruzan Rum factory. Sadly it too was closed so we turned around and headed back to Christiansted to do more shopping.
Christiansted is much nicer and more alive, so there was plenty more shopping to do. In one shop, the lady told us her husband worked at a brew pub down on the boardwalk and that tonight there was hermit crab racing. We went down to check it out.
So you put $2 down and choose from a huge container of hermit crabs. You give it a name which is marked on the crab and it is put into a bucket. At the start of each race, the organisers - Tito and his wife Sue - dumped the buckets of crabs in the middle of a chalk ring and commentated until the first three crabs crossed the line. Then they scooped them back into buckets and announced winners.
We each had a crab, but only Jess' crab - Sweet Tamarind - placed, earning us $20 off our bill for the evening. Once the racing was all done and dusted, we got food. I had a jerk chicken sandwich with fries, and compared to our other meals on the island so far, it came quickly and was delicious. Truly delicious. The jerk chicken had a real kick to it.
We returned to the hotel and grabbed towels and bits before heading up to the pool. No one else was in there as it was dark out, so we got to mess around undisturbed. I can't swim, so I had a couple of these float tube things to keep above the water but I tried teaching myself how to move about. It was good fun.
Now we're back in our rooms, warm and dry, resting up for tomorrow.
I don't want to leave.
If your Vox Neighborhood had a potluck dinner tonight, what dish, drink or dessert would you bring?
We're taking pumpkin pie to an actual potluck dinner on Saturday.
